About Ellen McCulloch Edwards
Ellen was named after her maternal great-grandmother, Helen (Ellen) McCulloch, who married John Pollock. The Pollocks' daughter Mary married James McGowan. Ellen was the 10th of 11 children of Charles Stewart Miller and Mary McGowan Miller.
When Ellen was still very young, her parents were converted to the LDS (Mormon) Church, and immigrated to America in 1848. They were in St. Louis, Missouri, in the summer of 1849, when a cholera epidemic struck. Ellen's parents and two of her brothers died, leaving her an orphan at the age of 4.
Ellen's older surviving brothers and sisters brought her to Utah and raised her. On Apr. 8, 1861, she married William Edwards in Greenville, Beaver County, Utah.
They had 12 children: Mary Ann, John Charles, Ellen Matilda, Sarah Jane, Margaret Elizabeth, Agnes Hannah, William James, George Heber, Alice, Joseph Miller, Emily Rosetta, and Melissa.
