About Ellen Louise Haines

It appears from the US immigration documents she filed in 1931 -- a so-called “Declaration of Intention” and a “Petition For Citizenship” -- that Ellen Louise Haines, “missionary”, never married. She was actively involved in the Mission House, both the early one and the more modern purpose-built one that was opened just after the turn of the century. By 1906 she was listed as the “Director of Women’s Work” amongst those serving on the committee that headed up the Madison Square Presbyterian Church. In 1931, when she finally got around to filing her immigrations documents and petitioning for full US citizenship, the guarantors on her application were Rev. Lee W. Beattie, head of the church, and George Kauski, superintendent. She was 73 years-old at that time. Photo & Information thanks to ROD ANSTEE
