Ellen Maria Partington Kay

Ellen Maria Partington, daughter of Ralph Partington (1806 - 1873) and Ann Taylor Partington (1810 - 1860), was born 14 September 1834 at Lancashire, England. Ellen's mother became one of the first English women to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints when she was baptized in the River Ribble in 1837. The Partington family emigrated to Nauvoo, Illinois, aboard the ship Swanton in 1843.

Ellen's parents were stricken with ague [malaria] when they landed in Nauvoo, Illinois which prevented them from working to support their family. Willard and Jeanetta Richards adopted eight-year-old daughter Ellen to help ease the burden. Ellen was sealed to Willard Richards as his daughter in the Nauvoo Temple.

Ellen's parents eventually recovered, and Ralph Partington found work as a carpenter, enabling him to send good clothing and shoes to Ellen before she crossed the plains with the Richards family. Ellen reached Utah with her adopted family in 1848, and married John M. Kay in Salt Lake City on 19 June 1851, three months before her seventeenth birthday. By the time her parents arrived in Salt Lake City, she was the mother of an 11-month-old baby.

In 1860 Ellen Maria Kay accompanied her husband on his second mission to England when she was twenty-six. They were in England for more than three years, and he died on the journey home in 1864. She never remarried, dying at the age of 69 on 19 October 1903 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, and is buried at Salt Lake City Cemetery, Plot: UK19854, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, United States.

Death Notice

"...Mrs. Ellen P. Kay, widow of the late John M. Kay, aged 69 years, died yesterday from heart disease at her residence, No. 7, Fourth East street. She came to Utah, from Preston, England, in 1848. The funeral will take place from the Twelfth ward meeting house at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon..."
