Notes for Ellen Amelia NELSON
Ellen Amelia's birth family was entirely Ontario born according to the 1851 Eramosa Twp. Census where her widowed father and several siblings lived (p.83). However, according to the 1891 McMurrich Twp. Census, her father had been born in the United States and her mother in Germany. Ellen's death place was irroneously described as Milton Twp in the vital statistics index, although her death was clearly reported by her son-in-law Arthur James of Fesserton, Ontario and she is buried in nearby Waubaushene Cemetery. On closer examination of her death register, it appears that her birth and death places were mixed up. Her parents' names are correct, though: William Nelson and Lydia Ensley. Death was certified by Dr. Porter of Waubaushene. Her given name also indexed incorrectly as Helen. She died from pneumonia, after her heart weakened.

Suggested edit: Ellen Amelia Nelson was the daughter of Joseph "William" Nelson and Lydia (Ensley/Enzley) Insley. Her parents were both born about 1804, her father possibly in the States. Lydia died first about 1848 leaving a young family. Joseph died sometime between 1851 and 1861. Their eight children were born around Milton, Ontario. Their burial places are unknown. The Nelsons and and Insleys are also believed to have had family in Prince Edward Co. where Joseph "William" Nelson had enlisted in 1st Regiment Prince Edward Military on Nov 29, 1928.
