Elmer Smith, 92

Jan. 2, 1912 - Jan. 5, 2004

Elmer Smith, of Hudson and formerly of Roberts, died Monday, Jan. 5 at the Christian Community Home in Hudson. Elmer was born Jan. 2, 1912 in Spring Lake Township of Pierce County, the son of Nathaniel and Minda (Krammes) Smith.

He attended the Cady Creek Country School prior to attending Elmwood High School. Elmer was raised on the family farm and learned many valuable lessons on life. His generation truly appreciated the value of the dollar as times during the depression weren’t easy. He worked several small jobs during this time.

On June 10, 1933, he was united in marriage to his best friend, Blanche W. Baker. This union would be blessed with sons, Richard and Theodore. Blanche and Elmer farmed for themselves from 1939 until 1985 when they “retired” from farming.

They began near Burkhart prior to dairy farming many years in the Roberts area. Following this, he worked for the Norlake Company. They moved from Roberts in 1989, when they moved into the city of Hudson.

Elmer enjoyed tinkering with electronics; repairing TVs and radios. Most recently, he liked working with beads making doilies and other crafts. Elmer and Blanche enjoyed a quiet Sunday attending a church service and visiting with friends for lunch at the Baldwin A&W. Earlier, he was an active member of the Oddfellows Club.

Elmer and Blanche both took great pride this past June as they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Over the years, they shared many special moments and memories together.

Elmer leaves to celebrate his life his wife Blanche; sons, Dick (Lucy) Smith of Hudson, Ted (Loretta) Smith of Luck; grandchildren, Jennie (Joe) Foust of Hudson, Minda Barthman of Hudson, Dave (Kelli) Smith of North Hudson, Diane (Mike) Coto of Pt. St. Lucie, Fla., Chris Smith of St. Croix Falls, Becky Smith of Dresser; great-grandchildren, Jake and Jessie Foust, Luke, Cole, Wade Petersen, Alaina Barthman, Ryan and Cyle Smith, Katie and Hannah Coto, Josh Smith; and sisters-in-law Lucille Smith of Stillwater, and Ruth Albrecht of Rogers, Ariz.

Elmer is preceded in death by his brothers, Lawrence, Cecil, Donald, and Clifford Smith, and sister Nina Shaw.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10 at the Hammond United Methodist Church with Pastor Carrie Hamm officiating. Organist Mary Post will accompany the singing of Jessie Foust. Burial will be in the Warren Cemetery in Roberts with casketbearers being Dave Smith, Chris Smith, Joe Foust, Jake Foust, Bob Baker, and Dennis Smith. Visitation will be on Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson and one hour prior to the service at church on Saturday.
