About Emilie Esther Ranschburg
Reminiscences of Emilie Ranschburg {found among my father's papers}
These touching pages have been penned by Emilie (Emi) Ranschburg, born Berl, in 1897, at age 61, and were offered as a gift to her family on the occasion of the silver wedding anniversary of her brother {Leopold? -- notes in these brackets with italics are mine -- Judy Kornfeld Baumgarten}.
One of the children of Emilie and Salomon Ranschburg was Gusztav Ranschburg who married Maria Kornfeld, called by her family and husband Mitzie (or Mici) and by her grandchildren Mumi. Their children were Margit, who married Laszlo Somjen, Magda, who married Werner Kornfeld {my grandfather}, Gyorgy, who married Kato Kajari, and Iren, who married Geza Seligmann.
I translated this memoir from a typed transcript of the German original, given to me by Janos Sellei. The text flows as if spoken by one used to tell stories to a circle of spellbound youngsters. I tried to preserve style as well as meaning, rather than recast it in current American usage. Only rarely did I divide excessively long sentences and paragraphs. Here and there I inserted a phrase of explanation [in spare brackets] for those who would not be familiar with a place name or expression of 19th century Austria. Remarks and digressions (in parentheses) are from the original typed transcript.
George Somjen, July, 1994
It may be advancing age which impels me to look backward rather than forward, or perhaps it is in connection with something in the present that stimulates me - without me being aware of what it is, - to think these days often and a great deal about our Parents. Every day reminiscences emerge of things I had not thought about in years, and one or other episode urges me to tell about it to my children.
