About Emily May Asher

Tuesday May 16, 1989 Hillsboro, Ohio Press Gazette

Mrs. Emily Chaney to celebrate 99th Birthday

Mrs. Harrison ( Emily ) Chaney of Xenia ( formerly of Hillsboro ) will be celebrating her 99th on May 18th.

She was born in Hillsboro to Jeptha and Effie ( Arledge ) Asher and later married Harrison Chaney, also of Hillsboro, the son of William and Mary E. ( Wilkin ) Chaney.

In time they moved to Wilmington, living there for several years, then on to Xenia where she now resides.

Her husband died in 1908 at the age of 92. The couple had three daughters, Marion Ledbetter, Florence, Kentucky; Doris at home and Dorothy Burnett in Palmetto, Florida. She has five grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Chaney has been very much interested in genealogy, receiving letters from over the states and trying to locate people here and there. Through the years she has received help from a librarian of England and from one of the Scandinavian countries. She has belonged to the Maryland, Hillsboro, and Green County societies.

According to Mrs. Chaney's daughter, Marion Ledbetter, her mother enjoys recalling her days of youth in Hillsboro. This includes days she spent in Beecher's Woods, gathering nuts and swinging from the vines in the trees.

She also remembers playing in a field where cattle were grazing and occasionally getting chased whereby she would have to climb the fence, sometimes getting stuck in the barbwire.

Memories of Rose Hill, where her husband and St. John's Hill where the youth enjoyed coasting afterwhich they would gather around a bonfire to keep warm.

Another favorite spot was Bell's Opera House with it's fine velvet curtains and how she paid 10 cents to see a show.

Band concerts in those days were held on a low platform where her father use to play.
