About Emily Piety
Emily (Thomas) Piety was daughter of Elijah and Sarah (Pound) Thomas. In 1846, Thomas Piety married Emily Thomas and they located on a farm near Hauger Hill, one mile north of Middleton. On the farm was a log house which they used for their first home. They lived at that log house until the death of Thomas after only seven years of marriage. In addition to farming, Thomas had a mill located on Prairie Creek, which flowed between his farm and his father's. Thomas had a habit of taking a swim in the mill pond after his day's work, and on one of these occasions he contracted pneumonia and died shortly thereafter. After Thomas died, Emily sold the mill and bought a home in Middletown, living there while her two sons were growing. Thomas also owned another farm one mile east of Middletown. Before their son Early (1948-1922) was of age, Emily gave him the farm east of Middletown. Their younger son Elijah (1852-1936) was given the farm north of Middletown, also before Elijah was of age. Emily had several suitors during her widowhood, although she never remarried.
Contrary to "OCT 19, 1900" inscribed on her tombstone, Emily's death certificate records her death in Prairie Creek as Oct 21, 1900 about 9 P.M. Her attending doctor B. F. Rynerson, also of Prairie Creek, saw her alive that day. The immediate cause of her death was one week of "Exhaustion," after 3 years of dealing with "Arterine Carcinoma." She was buried on Oct 22nd.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Mar 17 2024, 22:49:10 UTC
