About Emma Bowen
The date of Emma's birth is recorded in a red leather pocket book kept by her mother which lists the births of all ten siblings. It records that she was born on 14 January 1831 at Weymouth. Although it doesn't state where she was baptised, the record of her baptism at Melcombe Regis (transcribed) on 16 February 1831 can be seen online at http://www.opcdorset.org/WeymouthMelcombeFiles/MelcombeSM-Baps1831-....
The 1861 census records Emma Bowen, aged 27 and born in Weymouth, Dorset, at her brother Daniel's household in Paddington, London. Her occupation is listed as governess. There are four nieces and nephews aged between seven and one but no mention of Emma's son John Godfrey Wienholt Bowen, who would have been almost two. At the time Emma would have been heavily pregnant with her son Arnold Wienholt Bowen. (Also in the household as a governess is Agnes Caroline Bowen, aged 25 but no relation to Daniel. Perhaps she was looking after Emma's child?).
