About Emma Juliette Breaker

Emma Juliett was born to Nathaniel Bourdeaux and Henrietta Jane Hornby Juhan. Emma was the third of three daughters and her siblings were Mary Elizabeth and Anne Bourdeaux Juhan. Emma's mother, Henrietta was ill for many years, even as a young bride of 17 and continuing as the girls were born. When little Emma was born, her mother's health had completely failed. Emma's father had to take Henrietta to an institution for treatment and where she died, seven years later.

At the time of Emma's birth, Emma's father had hired a housekeeper and she cared for his children, so that the girls could be with him, in Milledgeville, when they were not in school. Her father was completely immersed in politics and his daughters were left for the servants to care for. A friend of Henrietta wrote to Emma Raymond Hornby Lowndes, Henrietta's sister, and told her the girls needed a mother's care. She offered to take them for a year, as she was also taking care of a child from her other sister, Claudia Hornby Groves, who had passed away. Nathaniel did not want to do that but he was so enveloped in his business that he was neglecting his daughters. This happened in 1836. Aunt Emma took the girls to see their mother, Henrietta, who was in the institution and she did not recognize her sister nor the three girls.

On October 11, 1848, in South Carolina, Emma Juliett married Jacob Manly Cantey Breaker. Together they had ten children and they were Manly Juhan, George Howe, Emma Henrietta, Henry Cantey, Eliza Prince, Etta Hornby, Anna Bourdeaux, Victoria Claudia, Emily Juhan, and Lewis Frederick Breaker.

Emma's husband was a pastor of many Baptist churches. They lived in South Carolina, Missouri, Texas and California. Their main home became Houston, Texas. Emma died in Houston in 1918 at the age of 88.
