About Emma Rolfe
Emma adopted Mihi Rahira after Mihi fell out with Emmas brother, who first adopted her, Hori (George Stockman).
Emma was Sarah Marsh's younger sister and the third child of Toumairangi and Edward which survived. On the 12th August 1872, she married Fred Rolfe at George Skelton's home, and they then farmed at Tikorangi, raising a family of eight. The eldest son Henry, died at the age of 21 in 1893. The Tikorangi Rowing Club of which he and his sisters were active members, erected a memorial to him at the Tikorangi Cemetery. Another sister, Rose, married Les Purdle and they settled in the back country, behind Mahoenui, breaking in several 100 acres of bush. The other children remained mostly around the Tikorangi district. Emma & Fred are both buried at the Tikorangi Cemetery along with most of their children.
