Ens. Isaac Gates was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1673. He is usually listed as being born in Boston, but McGhan says he may have been born in Middlesex County.
His first wife was Mercy (sometimes misreported as Mary) Benjamin of Yarmouth, Massachusetts, but since early Stow records were lost, the exact year is unknown. She was born March 12, 1674 or 1675 and died around 1709. Together, they had three sons -- Jacob (c. 1698), Jonathan (c. 1704), and Phineas (c. 1708).
He married his second wife, Elizabeth (Merriam) Farrar of Concord, around 1710. He signed a deed with her on June 20, 1713. Together, they had four daughters -- Miriam (c. 1711), Mercy (1712), Hannah (April 2, 1714), and Ruth (July 8, 1716).
He died in Stow, Massachusetts on November 22, 1748.
