On 11 October 1800 a deed between Morris Cox (Elizabeth's second husband) and Ephraim Black (her eldest son) released Elizabeth of all her dower rights. This deed states in its text that Thomas had died "on or about 15th day of March 1779". It also states that Thomas died possessing two tracts of land on Indian Creek and a larger tract of land in what became Rutherford County. This larger tract consisted of 563 acres on both sides of the Broad River.
