In 1830 Ephraim Roddy, a South Carolina attorney, his wife, Harriet Harrison Earle, and three children came from Tennessee down the lower Mississippi through the Gulf of Mexico and were ship wrecked during a tropical hurricane on the Texas coast near Quintian with other members of Austin's colony. They settled first at the capital San Philipi and moved to Washington with the capital, later they moved to Liberty Hill.

Ephraim was educated at South Carolina College. Died aged 86 years.

Ephraim Roddy, often referred to as Major Ephraim, was born in August 1786 in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, the son of Alexander and Agnes (Jameson) Roddy. He was educated at South Carolina College and admitted to the bar in South Carolina. He served in the War of 1812, and many years later he was called "Major", but whether he actually attained that rank during the war is not known. He married Harriet Harrison Earle, daughter of Colonel John Earle, at her home in Rutherford County, North Carolina in 1817. He moved to Texas from Tennessee in 1830, bringing with him his wife and five children. They settled near the town of Washington. At the Convention of 1833 Roddy represented the district of Washington-on-the-Brazos.

In 1844 he was appointed to a committee to lay out the county seat of Washington County, sell lots, and handle all business pertaining to the establishment of a seat of justice. Roddy was one of the first commissioners of Brenham. On February 3, 1845, he was elected justice of the peace, and on October 17, 1846, he was offered the position of notary public in Washington County, a post he declined to accept. Roddy owned a farm in Burleson County in September 1850 and 1860. By 1870 he lived as a farmer in Williamson County. He died on May 17, 1872, and was buried at Liberty Hill Cemetery.
