About Erasmus Decatur Scales
Erasmus was given first honors at University of NC in 1860. His name is listed in the diary of William B. Whitfield April 3rd to June 7th 1860 as getting first honors. He enlisted in the Civil War as a private in Suffolk, VA 30 May 1861.He served in Co H of the 13th regiment and was promoted the next month to Commissary Sergeant, whereupon he transferred to Field and Staff. In November of the same year, he was appointed Assistant Commissary of Subsistence, or captain, of this regiment (Pender-Scales brigade) 13th NC. After the War, he and Laura moved to Texas, where they left many children, among them Col. Wallace Bryan Scales, US Army.
