Erez Biton

Erez Biton - ארז ביטון‎; born 1942 in Oran, Algeria) is an Israeli poet of Moroccan descent. He is the 2015 recipient of the Israel Prize for Hebrew Literature and Poetry, among other literary awards.

Early life and education

Born in North Africa, his family fled Algeria as refugees in 1948, and made Aliyah to Israel. He grew up in Lod. At the age of 10, he lost his vision and his left hand to a stray hand grenade that he found. The following year he went to school at Jerusalem's Institute for the Blind. He earned a B.A. in social work from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and an M.A. in psychology at Bar-Ilan University.

Career

Following his studies, Biton worked as a social worker in Ashkelon for seven years and as a psychologist in an outlying town. He worked as a journalist and published a weekly column in the Israeli mainstream daily Maariv. His first book, Mincha Marokait (Moroccan Gift), published in 1976, established him as the founding father of Mizrahi poetry in Israel.

ארז ביטון הוא משורר מרכזי בשירה העברית אשר הצליח להרחיב באופן דרמטי את טווח החוויות הביוגרפיות והזיכרונות התרבותיים הנוטלים חלק בעיצובה של השירה העברית. חומרים שנתפסו בראשית דרכו כצדדיים התגבשו ביצירתו לשירה חדה ומדויקת שהגדירה מחדש את מגמותיה הבסיסיות של השירה הישראלית. שירתו עוסקת באהבה, בפחד מהמוות ובשאלות זהות על רקע ההגירה ועל רקע העיוורון. מתוך מצוקת העלייה והעיוורון צמח ועלה אדם שבחר לעסוק בתמיכה ונתינה, הן בצד המקצועי הן בחיי היום-יום. בשנים הראשונות של היותו משורר, בראשית שנות השבעים, הוא החל לגלות בתוכו את הקרע שהפך לכוח המניע של שירתו, העשויה פואטיקה חדשה – כזאת שאינה מתכחשת לזיכרונותיו המרוקאיים והערביים, החותרת להציג את הקרע בכל מוחשיותו. ביצירתו סלל דרך למשוררים וסופרים שביקשו לתת ביטוי לקונפליקט הזהות המזרחי. בשירת העיוורון שלו ממנף ארז ביטון את ההיגד האישי והופך אותו לאספקלריה אוניברסלית שבה כל אדם יכול למצוא את עצמו.

בכתב העת "אפיריון" שייסד וערך נתן ביטון במה למשוררים צעירים רבים, ובמרכז הים תיכוני שהקים סלל דרך למפגשי ספרות בין עמים ותרבויות.

ארז ביטון מתגורר ברמת השרון, נשוי לאדריכלית רחל ביטון קלהורה, והם הורים לאסף ארזי ביטון ולשלומית ביטון.
