In 1910 he, his wife, their daughter, his mother, step-father, and a boarder lived on a farm they were renting in Sioux Falls Township, Minnehaha County, SD.

In 1920 he and Goldie and their four children lived on a farm they were renting in Worthen Township, Hanson County, SD.

In 1930 he, his wife, seven of their children, and his father lived on a farm they were renting in Butler Township, Sanborn County, SD. They did not have a radio.

In 1940 he, Goldie, seven of their children--but not the same seven as in 1930, and nine-year-old grandson Robert Syndergaard lived in a place they were renting for ten dollars a month in the East Addition to Royal, IA. He worked as a laborer at a lumber yard, Goldie as a housekeeper for a private family, Ray as a helper at a grain elevator, and Loren as a laborer on a farm. Their incomes for weeks worked in 1939 were $720/52, $100/12, $720/52, and $100/15, respectively.
