Ernst Jacobus Stander (1965 - 2004)

Brief overview:

Ernest (38), a smallholding farmer from Putfontein, Benoni, was shot in the back on 10th January 2004 at around 23h00, and passed away a short while later.

Ernst was sleeping in bed, and his wife, Henrieta, and the couples two visitors, were watching television when four attackers invaded the house. It is believed they gained entry through an unlocked side door.

One of the attackers who was armed then assaulted Henrieta and the guests with an iron bar, and took all of their mobile phones. The three victims then hid under the table, while the attackers continued to loot the home.

Ernest woke up during the commotion. The perpetrators killed the couples puppy and fired off a shot at Ernst, which hit him in the back.

The police and emergency services were on the scene shortly after the incident, but Ernst had already passed away.

According to the couples neighbour, Pottie Potgieter, Henrieta was hysterical with grief, and vowed that she would never return to the house. She left the next day.
