About Ester Kremer
the first page of the interview with Ester....
While I was repairing the computer, getting ready to type
Ester- So,…what should I tell you About?
I- Any information that you see as essential to your life story
Ester- I was born in the small town of Smorgon, Poland. Today Smorgon
is part of Belarus.
I- What year?
Moshe Kremer ( Esters' husband who sits next to her) he wants to help
and says; 1929
Ester- (with determination) - Let me speak! I was born in 1927. I had
two sisters. One sister was born in 1924 ( Chana) . The oldest sister
( Mania) was born in 1921.
I studied in the Hebrew school 'Tarbut". My parents ( father; David)
were in commerce. They owned a store.
I was 13 when the war started. I just finished sixth grade. It was at
the start of summer vacation.
The war started on June 22, 1941. It is a date that would be
remembered for an entire lifetime.
We remember it and can not escape that memory…. And then, after two or
three days the Germans already entered….
I- What did you know before the Germans entered? Did you know anything?
Ester- we did not believe that there is any substance. ..There was
information in the Polish papers…
At that point of time we were on the other side of the border of
Poland ( the Soviet side)..The Germans entered (western) Poland
already in 1939 almost two years earlier…and….We read in the papers
about Germany and Poland and they told about killings of the Jews,
but we certainly did not believe it.
How could we believe that such an enlighten nation would do such things…
Moshe- No, no ..In no way did we believe it.
Ester- My father during a time was a prisoner of war under Germany it
was during the first World war.. he knew the German people well. He
even spoke their language well. We did not speak of any such things in
regard to the Germans. And for this even when the Germans entered, how
should I say it? Many greeted them with care and well wishes…because
people did not know what is really going on…what this nation was
really capable of doing.. No one believed the rumors.. And they,
immediately from the first day started to eradicate the Jews, as soon
as they arrived.
I- What do you know that they did? How did they eradicate the Jews
