About Esther Bybee

She is apparently one of those early, untraceable Floyds who don't show up in many, if any, records. She might be a sister of John Floyd of "Hog Island", or possibly a daughter if he was at least twenty years older than records indicate. But she can't be found in the Miles Files. http://espl-genealogy.org/MilesFiles

The Edmund Bybee whom she married is NOT the Edmond Bibby who married Frances Hunt.

There were at least two places known as "Hog Island", one of them a peninsula near the mouth of the James River and the other an actual barrier island on the Atlantic side of Northampton County (southernmost tip of the Delmarva Peninsula). Neither place is currently inhabited - the peninsula is a Wildlife Management Area. Without additional context it can be difficult, if not impossible, to tell which place is meant.

Her identity is much debated, as is exactly which Edmund Bibby she married. Edmund II must have been the one who was one of the patentees of Hog Island (c. 1681/1687), Edmund I being deceased by then.

John Floyd's daughter Esther was born in the 1680s, so unless she was a second wife and/or he was her second husband (this was still fairly common), the timing wouldn't work too well.

This Esther could have been an undocumented sister of John Floyd, or undocumented daughter by an undocumented first wife - the early Floyd lineage is very sketchy. This would lend support to the theory that John Floyd was actually born in Virginia, the son of either Nathaniel or Walter Floyd (both of whom are documented in the previous generation - Nathaniel Floyd arrived in the Bona Nova c 1618-19, Walter patented some 400 acres at Martin's Hundred before 1645).

The relationship between the Eastern Shore and mainland Virginia Bibby/Bibbee/Bybee families is anything but clear.
