Death date updated March 2019:
“I am researching Esther Smith for a chapter in a book about the Women of Smith's Castle. I am wondering what the source of her death date as 1699 is. I have read Wilkins Updike's The History of the Narragansett Church, David Updike Berkeley's Richard Smith the First English Settler of the Narragansett Country, and Carl Woodward's Plantation in Yankeeland. They all indicate that she died around the same year as her husband, Richard, Jr., in 1692. She had been named executrix for his will along with their nephew Lodowick. However, when the will was probated, Capt. Lodowick Updike was the sole executor.”
