Esther Virginia Thomas

Esther Cutler Thomas February 04, 2000|Compiled by Tiffany Hill Daily Press HAMPTON — Esther Cutler Thomas, wife of Charles S. Thomas and a lifelong resident of the Peninsula, died Feb. 2, 2000.

Mrs. Thomas is survived not only by her husband but by her sons, Allen Christopher Cutler, and his wife, Janet, and grandchildren, Allen Christopher Cutler Thomas Jr. and Margaret Allison Thomas, and Charles Sledd Thomas Jr., and his wife, Ann, and grandchildren, Virginia Cutler Thomas and Ann Borden Thomas; a brother, Robert C. Cutler, and wife, Allison; two sisters, Harriet Cutler Rose of Sunderland, England, and Elizabeth Cutler Smith; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Thomas was born May 23, 1915, daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. J.C. Cutler. She attended local public schools, then attended the Carnegie-Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh, Pa., where she majored in speech and drama. She graduated in the Class of 1936 from Lynchburg College, where she participated widely in debate, music and drama, being inducted into Alpha Psi Omega National Honorary Drama Society.

After college, Mrs. Thomas taught speech and English at Newport News High School. She is a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma Education Society, the Newport News Retired Teachers Association and the Hampton Woman's Club. She was often called upon to present humorous readings and was active in a neighborhood reading group.

On retirement, Mrs. Thomas gave generously of her time by volunteering at Sentara Hampton General Hospital and the Charles Taylor Library. She was a loyal member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where she occasionally served as a lay reader.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. Following the service, the family will receive visitors at the parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Sentara Hospice Hampton or the American Cancer Society.
