About Ethel Viola Nutting

Ethel Viola (Davis) Nutting passed to her eternal home on May 2, 2009. She was born September 1, 1914 to William A. Davis and Roxie (McClain) Davis in LeGrande, Oregon. At the age of 5 her family moved to Jerome, Idaho, where her parents bought a farm near Canyon Side School. She was a child of the depression who developed a compassion for those less fortunate than herself when she invited friends to her home where they enjoyed farm meals which included items that were unavailable to her friends who lived in town.

After graduation from high school, Ethel attend Albion State Normal School for two years where she received her teaching certificate. Her first job teaching was at the Greenwood School where she met and married the principal, Clifford Nutting, on December 24, 1938. She took Clifford’s two children, Gerald and Colleen, as her own and on December 13, 1940 she gave birth to son, Ted. On December 8, 1944 Gene was born when they were living in Buhl, Idaho.

After living in several homes in Magic Valley including Twin Falls, Roseworth, Buhl and Castleford, the family moved to the Nutting family farm near Acequia, Idaho. In 1952 Ethel began teaching again in the Acequia Elementary School. During the next several summers she attended summer school at Idaho State College in Pocatello to obtain her BA degree. She filled out her elective courses with art classes and has blessed her children’s homes with many of her paintings, many of them of Idaho scenic landscapes.

Ethel retired from teaching in 1977, and began traveling with Clifford to the places they had both dreamed of visiting for many years. Their adventure together included the southern states, a cruise to Alaska, a river float trip down Hell’s Canyon and a a horse-back pack trip out of the canyon.

About 1 and 1 half years after Clifford died in 1991, she sold the family farm and bought a little house in Jerome where she displayed her interests and skills in her flower gardens. At the age of 92, because of failing health, she made the difficult decision to leave her little home and moved into the Independent Living unit of Bridgeview Estates, where she lived until age 94 when her health took an irreversible decline.

Her Christian faith was lived out in the raising of her children and in her participation in church life, in the Christian Churches in Jerome, Twin Falls and Buhl, then in American Baptist Churches in Castleford, Rupert, and finally in Jerome. She has been involved in church in many capacities including Deaconess, pianist, organist and Sunday School Teacher. She also participated regularly in church women’s groups in the local church and in the region.

Ethel was preceded in death by her younger sister, Clara Johnston, her younger brother, Albert Davis, and her oldest son, Gerald (Jerry) Nutting. She leaves to celebrate her generous life her youngest brother, Bill Davis in Stockton California, daughter-in-law, Ruth Nutting in Kimberly, Idaho, daughter, Colleen McClellan in Twin Falls, Idaho, son Ted Nutting and wife, Kitty, in Loveland, Colorado, Son Gene Nutting and wife Ellen in Everett, Washington, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
