About Ethel (Kagan) Raben
GEDCOM Note
One of these sister's husband was drafted by the Russian Army and killed by the Kazaks.
One of the husbands was a little man, a shoemaker.
Ethel looked a lot like Anna. "They could have been twins."
Went to America when Helen was 9 months old (About May 1908)
Ettel worked in the Glass Factory in Telechan, Russia. Carole Garmen has a glass paperweight with "EK '07" carved in it (she has TWO of these) One is egg shaped with flowers in the middle. It looks like it was broken off at the bottom! The 2nd one is in the shape of a book. That’s the one that has the EK initials. Ettel brought it to the US. Jordan says there is another glass piece, looks like a book.
Ettel was orthodox and kosher. She was illiterate in English. But she knew how to pick up a can in a supermarket, and look for the circled “u”. She always cooked for the major Jewish holdays. She did all the work herself, assembling the table, settings, everything!
Very heavy woman.
Ethel asked Sam to marry Bess Smeizer. Sam was living with her. She wasn’t Jewish. Ethel liked her so much, even though Bess was not Jewish. Ethel really loved Bess. Despite Ethel’s Jewish Orthodoxy, she came to realize what a wonderful companion and mate Bess was for Sammy, she told her to marry him.
New Notes 2005: Ethel had an abortion. Her last child (#6). According to Helen Schaps, after all of the brothers were born (after Artie), Helen claims that Ethel fed breakfast to the family (to husband and 5 kids, sent them to school), she then went and had an abortion. She then came home and had dinner on the table for the family.
Lived at 4749 North Monticello Street, Chicago (Jordan Schaps-2005) She was there from 1948-1964.
