Eugene E. "Dutch" Hammersmith

Ellinwood -- Eugene "Dutch" Hammersmith, 66, died Jan. 5, 1987, at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend, after a sudden illness.

Born March 2, 1920, at Gorham, he married Thecla Graf, Sept. 12, 1938 at Gorham.

He retired in 1972 as a heavy equipment mechanic foreman at Midwest Machinery John Deere, Great Bend, and was a resident of Ellinwood since 1979. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellinwood.

Survivors: wife, of the home; sons, Eugene Jr., Kansas City, Kan., Kenneth, Baton Rouge, La., Steve, Ellinwood, Terry, Wichita; daughters, Pat Collins and Janice Wolfkill, both of Ellinwood, Barbara Kempke, Holyrood; brothers, Isadore and Herbert, both of Gorham, Leo, Lansing; sisters, Bridget Graf, Woodston, and Mrs. Katie Dauwe, Plainville; 21 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellinwood, Father John Maes. Burial will be Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery, Ellinwood. Parish rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Kimple Funerai Rome, Ellinwood. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may go donors choice.
