Eugene Schaefer (1934 - 2006)

Brief overview:

Eugene (72), was attacked and raped, and sustained 38 stab wounds to her face and neck, at her home in Parys on 30th may 2006.

Her killer, Simon Matshwane (20), pleaded guilty to theft, housebreaking, rape, murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. He worked in the same area where Eugene lived in, and had been watching her and knew that she lived alone.

After Matshwane broke into her home, he watched her sleeping for about half an hour, and when Eugene woke up, he stabbed her twice in the neck. He raped her while she lay bleeding. He stabbed her a total of 38 times with a pocket knife and a dagger.

  • On 5th February 2007, Matshwane testified in the Parys Magistrate's Court, that he used a condom so that he could not be implicated in the crime.
  • On 8th February 2007, Prosecutor Amanda Bester said Simon Matshwane received a life sentence each for housebreaking with the intent to commit rape and for murder. He was sentenced to a further 18 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and got another six months jail for theft. The sentences would run concurrently.
  • Judge Arrie Hattingh found Matshwane guilty on all four counts.
