Eugene Joseph Schmidt

Eugene J. Schmidt, age 91, lifetime Ellis County resident, died Sunday evening, December 30th, 2012, at the Anthony Community Care Center in Anthony, Kansas.

Eugene was born June 24, 1921, in Pfeifer, Kansas, to Joseph and Mary (Appelhans) Schmidt. He married Mary Herman from Liebenthal, Kansas on August 26, 1941. She died January 6, 2007. He was a farmer early in his lifetime and later worked for the Hays Flour Mill, Fort Hays Lincoln Mercury and Fort Hays Kansas State College. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his three sons, Gary Schmidt and his wife, Firma of Fort Collins, Colo., Lonnie Schmidt and his wife, Judy of Woodland Park, Colo., and Ernie Schmidt and his wife, Jeanette, of Cummings, Georgia; a daughter, Sandra Prickett and her husband, Brick of Anthony, Kansas; six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 4, 2013, at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine in Hays. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays. The Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard on Thursday from 5 until 6 p.m. at the funeral home followed by a parish vigil service at 6 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 until 7 p.m. and on Friday from 9 until 9:45 a.m. The family requests memorials be given to the Anthony Community Center in Anthony, Kansas, or Holy Cross Charities of Pfeifer, Kansas or for Masses in care of the funeral home.
