Notes for Evan Humphreys: Jane and Evan Humphries seem to have left Surry Co. abruptly about 1710, probably for Prince George Co., VA., in the area that later became Brunswick Co., but Richard stayed on. He is in several records of Surry Co. up to 1718, mostly for claiming bounties for killing wolves.

John was married to Mary White in 1715 in Surry, Virginia. Evan was brought the America by Roland Davies as a servant. Evan made a deposition on November 7, 1710 in Surry County that he had been in Virginia at least 30 years and that he came as a servant. He was granted a certificate for 50 acres of land "for importation of himself into this colony." 21. Jane Harris Stringfellow and Evan Humphreys had the following child: 10. i. John Humphreys, son of Evan Humphreys and Jane Harris Stringfellow was born in 1690 in Virginia, USA. He died in 1738 in Brunswick County Pennsylvania (St. Andrews Parrish Brunswick County Pennsylvania). He married Mary White. She was born on 05 Aug 1695 in Virginia, USA. She died after 26 Mar 1751 in Virginia, USA. _______________________________________________________________ According to "The Humphreys Chronicles", by Richard Carlton Fulcher, 1989, According to Family Tradition, Evan and his brother John with John's wife Ann came to Virginia on the ship, "Assurance de Lo" on July 24, 1635. They are recorded on a list of "First Settlers" who sailed from "the Port of Bristol to Virginia, Maryland, other parts of the Atlantic Coast, and West Indies" between 1654, 1663. ("Bristol and America: A Record of the First Settlers", Baltimore: Geneaological Publishing Co, Inc. 1967, pg 39) Evan sailed to Barbados. His eventual passage was paid by Hance Hendrick, who was later granted 574 in King and Queen County in the Pamunky Neck of VA, for the importation of 12 persons, including Evan Humphries. This grant was recorded in April 25, 1701, ("King and Queen County Land Grants", pg 362) There is a land patent, dated April 26, 1704, to William Lowery, who received 1044 acres of land in Sussex County, VA for the importation of 21 people, including Eval Humphries. The names on this list were similar to the Hance Henrick list. Doubled names include James House, John Jones, and William Bennett. (1704, Essex County, VA Land Grants and Patents).

In 1704, Evan Humphries was listed in the Virginia Quit Rent Rolls. A deed for the sale of land in 1705, recorded that he was a "Planter in ye lower part of Surry County."

According to Family Legend, Evan Humphries was married to Jane (Harris) Stringfellow, circa 1640. She was a widow, and the daughter of Richard Harris who died in 1679. By her previous marriage, she had a son, Richard Stringfellow. They had one known child: Robert Humphries, who married Mary White, sister of John White. Robert was born in the Isle of Wight County, VA in 1645. Mary was mentioned in the Will of John White, probated in Surry County VA, April 17, 1828. Abtracted in Part: "to my brother William White, wearing apparel and a chest. To my Cozen [sic] John Humphries, son of my sister Mary Humphries, 30 Shillings for learning...to the two eldest of my sister Mary's Children, 20 shillings to be for learning. to Sister Elizabeth WHite, 5 pounds money. To my brother Walter White, a bridle and saddle, and my great coat. To my Cousin Chris Morning "the whole duty of Man (a book), To Jane Morning, a Prayer Book. To my brother Charles White's three children, each 20 shillings to put them in school. To Thomas and Mary Wren, each a Bible. To Brother Walter White's Three Children to each 20 shillings. Brother Charles White, Executor. March 14, 1727.

Robert Humphries died in Surry County, VA circa 1713. His Estate was administered by Mary Humphries on June 15, 1714. Robert had 4 children: John Humphries, Robert Humphries, Griffin Humphries, and Thomas Humphries.
