Cause of his death was Miners Asthma, 5 years. Another name for Ezekiel was "Zake".

General Notes:

Ezekiel and Mary Ann emigrated to South Australia on the Caucasian a three masted Barque of 536 tons under the command of Capt. W.A. Davidson. She had been built in 1851. She set sail from Southampton on the 10th September 1857, arriving at Port Adelaide on the 26th December 1857. Six weeks into the voyage, Mary Ann gave birth to their first son, John. They had only been married for about 3 months.. Ezekiel is recorded as a Miner on the shipping record.

Many of his family members, including his parents, followed in April of 1858.

A family story tells of the time that Ezekiel Hocking's daughter Elizabeth was born, Zake was so thrilled at the birth of a daughter that he celebrated a little over-well at the pub. When he was having some difficulty making it home he met John Bromley and asked his assistance. Bromley agreed on conditon that Zake sign the pledge which he dutifully did.

According to his death certificate he had spent 4 years in South Australia and 25 years in Victoria, indicating that he moved to Victoria soon after William John was born.

His & Mary Anne's grave is adjacent to that for their son Ezekiel Jnr. Their Memorial stone reads: Erected by / MARY ANNE HOCKING / in loving memory of her husband / EZEKIEL HOCKING / who died 25th April 1887 aged 51 / also our son / STEPHEN / aged 5 years / and daughter / MARY / aged 8 months / "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord" / ALSO / MARY ANNE HOCKING / who died 18th July 1929 aged 94
