About Fannie Pocock

FANNIE LEHMAN POCOCK, was born the daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Lehman at West Jefferson in Williams County, Ohio, on August 28, 1872. She was one of 10 children, seven of whom have preceded her in death. Her father was a minister and a farmer in that community and her schooling was all received in the Williams County Schools. At an early age she chose the Christian way of life and practices it until her death.

On November 1, 1896, she was married to Andrew J. Pocock and she came to Steuben County, Indiana, to care for his aged father, Levi, and his three motherless children, Clyde A., Edith M., and Ralph D. Pocock. Six children were born to the couple: Bertha, Edna, Wava, Harold, Russell, and Robert Pocock.

For 22 years the couple labored, building and farming the same farm. On December 19, 1918, her husband, Andrew, passed away and she then managed the farm and raised and schooled the children. She was active in community life and was a member of the Nevada Mills and Pleasant Hill Church which she served as long as her health permitted.

Her grandchildren were especially a delight to her and she enjoyed hearing about their schoolwork. The old homestead was always a center of activity and everyone was always welcome to her hospitality. Six years ago, her sister, Sarah, who had lived in the home for 50 years, passed away.

Even to the end, although not physically strong, she was active in mind and spirit and on March 8, 1957, she passed away leaving a void in the community she so dearly loved. She is survived by all the children except one, Russell, who passed away on 1934 after 3 and 1/2 years of illness. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Leah Bechtel, of Wakarusa, and a brother, Daniel Lehman of Bryan, Ohio.

Funeral services were conducted in the home at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, with Rev. Joseph Kimbel officiating. Burial was in the Jamestown Cemetery.
