About Fanny Dan

GEDCOM Note

According to her grandson David Rubin (telephone interview with Laura C. Katz on November 3, 1999), Fanny met her husband Abba Bzael (Anglicized to Abraham) when he came to Smela from Kovno, Lithuania to study at the yeshiva there. Her granddaughter Roslyn Hoffman, in an interview with LCK on January 15, 2000, said that her grandmother was washing windows when her grandfather first saw her. She had reddish-blonde hair and he was so taken with her that he asked [her father?] if he could marry her. Like with many other women of her time, there is conflicting documentation about Fanny's age. The passenger ship manifest lists her as 42 (2 years older than Abraham) in March, 1906, implying a birth date of about 1863. However, the 1910 Census gives her age as 45, making her birth year 1865. Another contradiction: while David gave her name as Faya, and her daughter Ida's death certificate reads "Fanny," she is listed as Rae on Ida's marriage certificate on the "Mother's Maiden Name" line. She died in David's arms at their home in Brooklyn. While David thought it was around the time he had his bar mitzvah (which would have been 1926 or 1927) it actually happened in 1934, shortly after he turned 21.
