She was born on August 17, 1825 in Warrick County, Indiana. Her schooling was limited to a few short sessions in a building with split log seats and floor. Her writing lessons consisted of long sessions of drawing straight lines. That this technique was not successful is indicated in her pension application in 1890 which states "claimant does not write." Fanny insisted that "Fanny" was her given name and not Frances as is seen in some records. On her eighteenth birthday, August 17, 1843, Fanny married Peter Armstrong Wallace. Peter and Fanny lived together for 32 years until he moved to Indian Territory. He left her with only the 40 acres of land that a neighbor described as worth no more than $250 and so poor that it would not raise enough to pay the taxes for it. Fanny Reed Wallace died on November 9, 1906 in Warrick County, Indiana.
