Fanus Badenhorst (1980 - 2007)

Brief overview:

Fanus (28), a young farmer from Jacobsdal, Free State, was shot dead on the night of Saturday 11th March 2007. He sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police spokesperson inspector Loraine Kalp said four men were arrested within 12 hours of the attack. One of the men who shot Badenhorst was a suspected rapist and later committed suicide.

According to inspector Isaac Ntoyi, the town's chief detective, Leon Mahlaba was out on bail while awaiting trial for rape. He drank poison shortly before being arrested at home on Sunday morning and died later in a Kimberley hospital. Three other men, all in their early twenties, were arrested on Sunday afternoon, Kalp said.

  • March 2007: Inspector Loraine Kalp said Boetie Benjamin Geduld (21), and two boys aged 17 appeared briefly in court. They were remanded until their next court appearance on March 22nd 2007. A fourth suspect died shortly after he was taken into custody. He apparently drank poison just before police arrived at his house. The 24-year-old man was taken for medical treatment and died at the Kimberley hospital. Kalp said a stolen revolver was also recovered at a suspect's house. The revolver was stolen during a robbery in the same area, earlier.
