ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Farrell Max Pugmire, 87, returned home to his Heavenly Father Sunday, October 31, 2004 at Porter's Nursing Home in St. George, Utah, after battling several prolonged illnesses. Pug was born April 24, 1917 in Midvale, Utah, to Justin Gerald and Clara L'Zina Barker Pugmire. He grew up in the Cache Valley, Laketown area. Pug married Dorothy May Horne in 1942 and later divorced. They had six children. He married his sweetheart, Alvina "Pat" Correll, in 1967. That marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple in 1970.
Pug was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints his entire life. He held many positions in the Church. Pug loved to travel. Pug and Pat have lived in Washington, Oregon, and Utah. Pug worked on a cattle ranch as a youth. He spend 20 years as a paint store manager. He continued on to sales, real estate, and insurance. He was very active in land development, many here in Southern Utah, including Buena Vista. He was very social. He loved to dance and sing. He loved yard work, and always had a beautiful yard. Pug loved camping with his family, sports, and music. Pug was fun loving and loved to tell jokes. Pug was a very loving father, husband, and grandfather.
Pug served in the United States Coast Guard for five and one-half years during World War II. When war was declared, the Coast Guard went under the command of the U.S. Navy. He served on the USS General Scott as Chief Petty Officer Commissary Steward. He served in the South Pacific and European Theater.
Pug is survived by his dear wife, Alvina "Pat" Pugmire; six children, Max Lamonte (Sherry) Pugmire, of Salt Lake City, Farol Esther (Russell) Limb, of St. George, Dan Stephen (Cherrin) Pugmire, of Snohomish, WA, Dale Arthur (Kathy) Pugmire, of Apple Valley, UT, Mary Ellen (David) Smith, of Cedar City, UT, and Elizabeth May (Blaine) Mitchell, of Mona, UT. He was the proud grandfather of 31 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He had 5 stepchildren and 17 step-grandchildren. He is survived by two brothers and two sisters, Theora Hammer, of Salt Lake City, June Gale, of Salt Lake City, Glen Pugmire, of Midway, UT, and Devearl Pugmire, of Medford, OR. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gerald Pugmire and Lavon Mckay Pugmire.
The family would like to thank the Porter's Nursing Home staff for the wonderful support and care of Pug and Pat. Pug loved you all dearly. The family would also like to thank the St. George 1st Ward Relief Society for providing compassionate service.
Dad, we miss you already. We love and miss you, Grandpa.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at 12:00 noon at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel. A visitation will be held Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., prior to services, at the Mortuary. Interment, with full military honors, will be at the St. George City Cemetery.
