About Father William Clowry

Administrators: William Clowry 1820‑1829 http://www.tullowparish.com/our-parish/parish-history/

Father Clowry appears as one of the Superiors at Carlow College, in 1818. He was principally distinguished, and his services much sought after, as a preacher. He was one of the chief disputants in the memorable Biblical discussion which took place at Carlow in 1824. He became Administrator of the Mensal Parish of Tullow where he died in 1829. Dr. Doyle wrote the inscription which appears there on his tornb ; the Bishop refers to him as one " whose talents and virtues came forth with him from his mother s womb, and were cultivated by him with the most assiduous care. His zeal, his eloquence, and polemic writings placed his name, when he had only arrived at manhood, among the most distinguished in the Church of Ireland." He died at the early age of 35.

From Delany Archivist: There is a book by Fr John McEvoy listing the ordained students and staff of Carlow College. The entry for Fr William Clowry (1794-1829) says that he taught at Carlow College between 1818-1820 and was Administrator, Tullow, between 1820-1829. The Delany Archive holds the archives of the Brigidine Sisters. They have a convent in Tullow and its Annals for 1829 say that Fr Clowry died during the month of May.
