According to Joan Zuckerman (daughter of Fay): Name changes on the census could be the result of the census taker not understanding Bubbie’s accent (Mary Kadishowitz). Here’s the best I can figure - Fannie was Fay although I’m not clear about who may have given her that name. I know she was referred to as Fannie by someone(s), but I never heard it used. Her birth name was Faygeh which Bubbie always called her and her siblings used occasionally. I know she was always known as Fay in school.

Fannie was the "legal" name but she was rarely referred to by that name.
