About Felix Maxwell Keesing

Felix and Marie Margaret Martin married 21 Jul 1928 Auckland, who committed suicide several months later, daughter of Frederick Samuel Martin and Alice Maude Peart. They immigrated to the USA in 1945 and resided in Honolulu in 1940. One of Felix’s memories was of a tiger roaring under their house when he was three years old. It is quite evident that Felix had lost his respect for his father Joshua being Felix only cited his mother when he engaged Marie 14 May 1926, “The engagement is announced of Marie Margaret, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Martin, of Grafton to Felix M. Keesing of Palmerston North, younger son of Mrs. T. Luxton of Auckland.”. His mother Ethyl Beaumont and father had divorced and she had married Thomas Luxton.



Felix was an Anthropology Professor having received a B.A. degree at the University of New Zealand in 1924, an M.A. in 1925, and a Doctorate in Literature in 1933. He was a member of the Fellowship Rockefeller Foundation Social Science at Yale 1928-1929, attended University of Chicago 1929-1930, London School of Economics and Political Science 1932-1934. He was the General Secretary at the Y.M.C.A. at Palmerston New Zealand 1926-1928, Director of the International Research Project for the dependencies, and native peoples of the Pacific for the Institute of Public Relations 1930-1934. Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Hawaii 1934-1935 while residing on Tusitala Street in Honolulu, Associate Professor 1935-1937, Professor in the school of Chemistry then in Anthropology and Sociology 1937-1942, served in the Office of Strategic Services in Washington DC, Teaching Associate at Columbia University Naval School 1942-1946, Associate Director at Stanford School of Naval Administration 1946-1948, Executive Director at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology 1948-1956, U.S. Senior Commissioner of the South Pacific Command 1948-1957, Technical Consultant for the United Nations Mission to Western Samoa 1947. Marie Margaret Keesing was an anthropologist educated at University of New Zealand. She spent most of her working life in the United States, where she worked closely with her husband.
