Fielding Isaacs was born about 1816 in Clay County, Kentucky, to Samuel Isaacs (b abt 1773, d abt 1838) and Nancy Agnes Baldridge (b abt 1773, d aft 1860). His parents were both born in North Carolina.
Fielding married Susannah "Susan" Bowman in 1830 in Clay County, KY. Because both Fielding and Susan would have only been 14 in 1830, there has been some question about the accuracy of this date. In her Civil War pension deposition of 13 November 1884, Susan said she was 18 when she married Fielding. Even though this later date does not agree with the county's recorded date, it does seem to coincide a little better with the birth of their first child, Cornelius, in 1835. Fielding and Susan's divorce was granted in November of 1867, and became effective one year later.
Fielding had abt 26 children by about five women. He was probably only married once to Susan Bowman (b abt 1816 in Booneville, Owsley Co., KY; d aft 1884 in Jackson Co., KY. He had children with Levisa (or Levinsa) "Vicey" Johnson; she was his niece and the daughter of Fielding's sister Elizabeth Isaacs Johnson (b 1867 in Floyd Co., KY; d bef Apr 1861 in Jackson Co., KY), Mary Jane Stevens (b abt 1838 in KY), Nancy Stevens (b Mar 1840; d aft 1910), and Jane "Jennie" Johnson (b Aug 1853 in KY). Possibly Nancy and Mary J. were sisters. According to depositions, Fielding and Levisa/Levinsa's daughter, Jenny Johnson, may have been the 5th woman (Jennie) that Fielding lived with and fathered children by. Per Judy Wagers, Jennie's name was Jane "Jennie" Johnson, b 4 Aug 1853 in KY, d 17 Nov 1924 in Pulaski Co., KY, and that her parents were Mary and Albert Johnson. If this is true, then Jennie was not Fielding Isaacs' daughter.
(1) Children with Susan Bowman Isaacs: Cornelius M., Nancy, Wilburn B., Darius, Jasper, Alfred J., Margaret, James, Elisha, Andrew Jackson Isaacs. (2) Children with Levisa/Levinsa Johnson: Nancy Jane, Edie, Andrew Jackson, Jenny, Rachael, Carolyn Johnson. (3) Children with Mary J. Stevens: Sarah Ellen, James Buchanan, Vincent W. Stevens. (4) Children with Nancy Stevens: Lewis, Nelson, John Stevens. (5) Children with Jennie Johnson: Elbert F., Bertha C., Harlan L., Ary Ettie Isaacs (they had Fielding's last name; possibly Fielding married Jennie).
According to many of the depositions given on behalf of Susan Bowman Isaacs (she claimed a mother's pension based on the service of her son Jasper, who died during the Civil War), Fielding was a womanizer who had had numerous affairs before he deserted his family about 1861.
In 1870, Fielding was living in Garrard County with an 18 year old girl named Jennie Johnson. In 1880 he was living with the same Jennie in Wayne County. Fielding died after 1880 in Wayne County, Kentucky.
Fielding Isaacs was the father of my great-grandfather, Vincent Stevens, and the grandfather of my paternal grandmother, Mary Jane Stevens Cain. http://janstree.com/LinkSamuelNancy.htm http://janstree.com/LinkFieldingIsaacs.htm
