About Flt Off. James Whyte
James Whyte was born in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, Scotland on 6 September 1917. His parents were Thomas Kerr Whyte (1889-1940) and Lizzie Muir Whyte (nee Brodie) (1891–1976) who had married in the Good Templars Hall at Kilbarchan on 7 August 1912. The family emigrated to New Zealand on board the 'Hororata', arriving in Auckland on 19 February 1925. James joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 547 Squadron, during World War II. He was killed when his bomber, a Wellington XI HZ351, crash into the sea.
