About Frances Eileen Russell
Frances Eileen Russell, nee Wood was the daughter of Janet Wood, nee Cleary and was born in Rathmines Dublin, Ireland in 1904. She attended Alexandra College and then did Botany and Zoology at Trinity College, Dublin University, Ireland. She graduated with a BA Hons. She then worked for a time at University College Hospital, laboratory and later at the Cortright Memorial Museum in Bradford England
She met my father, John Noel Ussher Russell while at University, through her cousins, the "Wood" boys, Ernest, Victor and Frank. They were married in Bradford, Yorkshire, England in I929 and lived in Horbury, Yorks (near Leeds) where my father was in General Practice. Their first child Helen was born in 1932 in Leeds and was educated mostly at home.
At the outbreak of World War 2 they were on holiday in Ireland, visiting my Grandfather George Russell and his wife Maud. History tells me that my mother remained in Ireland while her husband - John, joined up and enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
In the meantime Susan Ann Carew (Russell) was born in 1940 and Frances remained in Ireland for the duration.
She lived with her Mother - Janet Wood (nee Cleary) at first in Northern Ireland (Portballintree), then Greystones, Co Wicklow and then settling in Killybegs Co. Donegal until 1944, when she entered Trinity College for a second time to study medicine which she completed in December 1949.
