His widow went on to be a celebrated patron of literary men including Alexander Pope, John Gay, and Thomas Southerne, the dramatist, all of whom visited Holme Lacy. Her death from smallpox on 3 May 1729 occasioned Pope's comment ‘and Scud'more ends her name’ (Works, 2.436), for the title had become extinct on the third viscount's death, but the Holme Lacy estate in fact perpetuated the family name for another century.
