About Frances "Agnes" Staggs

Frances “Agnes” Staggs was born May 14, 1920, to the late Samuel and Artie Dennis in Kingston, Tenn., and peacefully passed away Sunday, May 1, 2016, in Longview.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Staggs; two brothers, Roy Dennis and Clarence Dennis; and a sister, Hazel Hogarty.

Her family moved from Tennessee to Washington when she was 18 months old. After living in Eastern Washington for two years, they moved to Longview in 1924. Agnes graduated from R.A. Long High School with honors in 1938, and Lower Columbia College in 1940.

She and Ray were married in July 1941. Ray joined the Naval Air Corps during World War II and Agnes moved with him to Pensacola, Fla., and San Diego, Calif. They returned to Longview in 1945.

Agnes began working for The Longview Daily News in 1952 as assistant editor and later became editor of the society page “This Day.” She was best known for her column “Stagglines.”

Both Agnes and Ray retired in 1979 and began escorting groups on trips and cruises all over the world. They also spent 17 winters in Mesa, Ariz., and visited many places throughout the United States. Summers were spent at their home on Lake Merwin, entertaining and enjoying family and friends. After Ray’s passing in February 2004, Agnes remained active in several clubs, organizations, and her church in Longview.

Agnes is survived by three children, Marilyn Staggs-Walstead of Gig Harbor, and Bruce Staggs (Penny) and Gary Staggs, both of Longview. She was also blessed with four grandchildren, Lynn Barton (Bob), Kent Walstead (Lisa), Troy Staggs (Carrie) and Tricia Carleton (Mike); and seven great-grandchildren. She had several nieces and nephews who were very special to her and she enjoyed their visits and lunch dates.

A memorial service to celebrate Agnes’ life is planned for 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Christian Church in Longview with the Rev. Eric Atcheson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church, 2000 E. Kessler Blvd. Longview, WA 98632 or the Community Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632.

Agnes will be deeply missed by all.
