About Frances Eleanor Thruston

Clark sister Frances Eleanor "Fanny" Clark O'Fallon Thurston (1773-1825). Family tradition recalls her being known as the "great black-eyed beauty of Kentucky." She first married James O'Fallon in 1791, but the marriage was unhappy and they separated. He shortly afterward died, and Fanny married second Charles Mynn Thruston, to whom she actually had been engaged before marrying O'Fallon, though a misunderstanding had foiled their nuptial plans. She married Thruston in 1796, and then Dennis Fitzhugh in 1805; she was widowed both times. After the deaths of her first and second husands (but particularly the second) William was quite involved in the conduct of her affairs and the welfare of her children. Family tradition states that she and her four fatherless children lived with William and George, first at Mulberry Hill and then across the river at Clark's Point. William was close to several of his nephews and looked upon them almost as sons. Fanny moved from Louisville to St. Louis ca. April 1825 in order to be under the direct care of her son-in-law, Dr. Bernard G. Farrar, but the illness she had been suffering from did not improve, and she died on 19 June 1825. She is buried in the John O'Fallon family lot in Bellefontaine Cemetery. (dorman (1), 26; Thruston family file, TFHS; Charles W. Thruston Papers, Charles W.
