About Frances Elizabeth Van Schaick

wife of John "Frances E. Shaver Van Schaick, widow of Senator John Van Schaick, died Saturday, August 25th, at her home on Grand Street where she had lived for more than fifty years. Her husband predeceased her eleven weeks ago. Mrs. Van Schaick was the daughter of Charles H. and Salina Hynds Shaver and was born at Hyndsville January 21, 1851, moving to Cobleskill when a small child. She was a direct descendant of Lawrence Lawyer the Revolutionary soldier who lived where the Agricultural School now stands and who took an active and conspicuous part in the early days of the settlement when Cobleskill was a part of the frontier. He fought in the battle of Cobleskill as did another of Mrs. Van Schaick's great, great grandfathers, Nicholas Warner. Elizabeth Lawyer, Daughter of Lawrence Lawyer married David Schuyler, a member of the illustrious Albany family of that name and their only child, Ann Eliza Schuyler, married Henry Hynds. Henry Hynds was the son of William Hynds the first settler at Hyndsville and whose family as well as the family of Nicholas Warner were taken prisoners by the Tories and Indians in 1781 and carried off to Canada. Mrs. Van Schaick was married May 25, 1871 to John Van Schaick then a rising young lawyer of this village. Throughout their lives Mr. and Mrs. Van Schaick were interested and active in all which had to do with the welfare of the community ... She is survived by six children, Charles S. Van Schaick of St. Paul, Minn.; Rev. John Van Schaick of Washington, D. C.; Col Louis J. Van Schaick of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; George S. Van Schaick of Rochester; Mrs. Arden L. Norton and Francis E. Van Schaick of this village; by two sisters, Mrs. Jessie S. Greenslet of Glens Falls and Mrs. William B. Phelps of Boston and by one brother, Stanton C. Shaver of Albany, and by eleven grand children. The funeral services were held from her home Monday afternoon at 3 p. m., Rev. George B. Scholten of Lawyersville, officiating. Interment was made in the Cobleskill cemetery." ["The Cobleskill Index" (Cobleskill, NY), Aug. 30, 1923, Page 10]
