About Francesco Converso
ACCIDENT NO. 17- March 23, 1911-Frank Converso, Red Jacket Shaft, C. & H.
Frank Converso, an Italian laborer, employed at the Red Jacket Shaft, received injuries on the night of February 27, 1911. He died in the hospital (after an operation which was necessary because of a broken spine) on March 23, 1911.
An inquest over his body was held before Justice Fisher. The following witnesses testified:
Dominic Fieri: "I was working at the 69th level Red Jacket Shaft at the time deceased was injured. On the night of the 27th of February, the car was coming from inside and Frank went to open the door. It was tight and he gave it another hard pull so that it rebounded and shut again. He went to pull it open again and by that time the car was there and struck him. After the cars went by I went in to pull him out. He spoke after awhile. We got the cage and sent him up."
Peter Miglio: "I am a laborer, employed at the Red Jacket Shaft. On the 27th of February, I was working in the plat. I did not see Frank Converso when the car struck him, I was behind him. The plat man called to me and I went to help take him out."
Verdict: "That the said Frank Converso came to his death March 23, 1911, from the result of injuries received February 27, 1911, at the 69th level Red Jacket Shaft of the C.&H. Mining Co., by being struck by the tram car while opening the trap door at the plat."
