About Francis Andrews, of Hartford & Fairfield

Information on the Francis Andrews and Anna Smith ancestry comes from John V. Beck's "Elisha and Lavina (Locke) Andrus, Their Ancestors and Descendants, p.35 through the LDS.

Francis Andrews, immigrant ancestor, was born in England and settled in 1639, in Hartford, Connecticut. His home was at what is now the corner of Elm and Trinity streets. He removed to Fairfield, and died there 1662-3. His will was dated June 16, 1662, proved March 5, 1663. Children: John, baptized Sep 27, 1646; Thomas, bapt Jan 2, 1648; Jeremiah; Abraham, mentioned below; Elizabeth; Mary; Esther; Rebecca; Hannah; Ruth.

  1. Barbour records

He settled in Hartford, 1639; removed to Fairfield. May have been brother of William of Hartford and John of Farmington. It is at least worthy of note that John (son of Francis) and Thomas (son of William) married sisters, daughters of John Kirby of Middletown; while Thomas (son of Francis) and Abraham (son of John) also married sisters, daughters of Robert Porter of Farmington. Will 6 Jun 1662 proved 5 Mar 1662/3; wife Anna; sons John, Thomas, Jeremiah, Abraham; daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Hester, Rebecca, Ruth; John Cramton and my daughter Hannah; granddaughter Hannah Cramton

There are two immigrant ancestors which bear this surname. First is considered the John Andrews of Farmington, Connecticut, then is traced the Line of Francis Andrews of Hartford and Fairfield, Connecticut. It has been suggested that John Andrews was from County Essex, England and that he was a brother of Francis Andrews. These points have yet to be proven. Both Francis and John Andrews had sons who married daughters of Robert Porter of Farmington, Connecticut. Francis Andrews/Andrus/Andros, wife Ann(e) Smith daughter of John Smith. In Bronson's, The History of Waterbury, Connecticut (Waterbury: Bronson Brothers, 1858), p. 131, he calls Abraham Andruss, Sen., the son of "Thomas [sic] who had removed from Hartford to Bankside, in Fairfield, had four sons - John, Abraham, Jeremiah and Thomas & 6 daus., will dated 1661." These are, of course, the children of Francis Andrus/etc. of Fairfield, Conn. Information was correctly printed in the History of Ancient Woodbury, Connecticut, from the First Indian Deed in 1659 to 1854 by Wm. Colburn(?)(Waterbury: Bronson Bros., 1854) under "Additions to Family Records" (p. AP161): Abraham Andrus Sr.. was s[on] of Francis of Hartford and Fairfield who d. 1661. The information about the wife of Francis Andrews: Ann (?second) wife of Francis has been called the daughter of Giles SMITH (Virkus III, p. 607), but "Johanna Smith daughter of Gylles Smith was bp. March the twenty five one thousand six hundreth and forty and nyne" (NEH&G Register XII, 196, "Original Distribution of the Town of Hartford, Among the Settlers, 1639") making her too young to be the wife of Francis. In Torrey (pp. 17, 682) Anne/Anna (_____) ANDREWS m. second, ca. 1664, Henry SMITH who d. 1687, his widow dying 1690. There is also evidence she was the daughter of John SMITH; perhaps it is of no consequence; at least, until it is determined whether or not she was the mother of the children of Francis ANDREWS. In Savage (I, pp. 56-57) is indicated that Francis was at Hartford from 1639-1647/48 and that his name is on the Founder's Monument there; in 1648 or after he moved to Fairfield where he d. between 6 June 1662 (date of will) and 5 Mar. 1663 (date of probate). He was an early member of First Church, Hartford as his two oldest sons were bp. there. In his will he provides for four sons and five daughters: John, Thomas, Jeremiah and Abraham, Elizabeth Mary, Esther and Ruth besides Hannah who had m. John CRAMPTON, after of Norwalk, Conn. Francis purchased, before 1640, the north part of Richard BUTLER's lot, on the corner of the present Elm and Trinity Street, Hartford. Children (from the above references, including his will): A-"John Andrewes sunn of Frances Andrewes, bap. Sept. 27, 1646"(Hartford Town Records) d. 1683, at Fairfield 1670; m. and had two children living when he d. B-"Thomas Andrewes sunn of Frances Andrewes bp. Jan. 2, 1647/48" (IITR) d. 1700 (Savage) or 1718 (Torrey); probably the Thomas ANDREWS of Hartford, freeman 1667; at Milford, Connecticut, 1675-1700. From NEII&G Register XI, p.__: "Records of Farmington - Hannah & Mary Andrews, twin dau. of Thomas Andrews of Melford, son-in-law to Robert Porter, bp. here by writes of communion of church May 31, 1685". C-Jeremiah ANDREWS, probably the Jeremiah of Bedford, N. Y., 1697; if so his (second?) wife which he m. 8 Sept. 1697 was Hannah (GOLD) AMBLER. D-Abraham ANDREWS of Waterbury, Connecticut, m. Rebecca CARRINGTON, eight children (not to be confused with Abraham o_f Farmington [son of John] who also moved to Waterbury) E-(Elizabeth) Mary ANDREWS. One Mary d. 1691, daughter of Francis, m. Simon COOLEY who d. 1688 at Fairfield (Virkus III, p. 607). One Mary d. 1671 m. Simon COUCH d. 1688 (?the same). F-Esther/Hester ANDREWS. G-Rebecca ANDREWS m. 7 July 1678 (as his second wife) Samuel BENEDICT of Norwalk and Danbury, Connecticut. H-Ruth ANDREWS. I- Hannah ANDREWS who m. John CRAMPTON, later of Norwalk. [1, 5]
