About Francis Mudie of Breckness

The Moodie Book

Francis Mudie of Breckness, Snelsetter Castle and Melsetter, succeeded his father before September 1603. Privy Council Records indicate that Francis engaged in many disputes with Patrick (Stewart), second Earl of Orkney, probably as a result of the Earl having seized many Mudie lands.

Married twice. Firstly to [?his cousin] Margaret, daughter of James Stewart of Graemsay; and secondly in 1626 to Marion Tulloch, relict of Arthur Sinclair, and had a large family; including at least 3 natural sons, earning himself the nickname 'Wanton' Francis, or 'Wanton' Mudie.

  • William Mudie of Melsetter (by first wife) an elder in 1624; dsp before July 1631 when his brother James appears in a sasine as "eldest lawful son";
  • James Mudie (by first wife), his heir;
  • Patrick Mudie of Manclet (by first wife) baptised about 1621, 44 years old in 1665;
  • Charles Mudie
  • Francis Mudie, horse merchant in Orkney, married Margaret Mowat, and had issue;
  • Helen Mudie (by first wife, eldest daughter), married before 1621 Patrick Gordon of Cairston;
  • Barbara Mudie, married before 1622 Patrick Balfour of Gairth, and afterwards of Pharay.

At least three natural sons:

  • Donald Mudie;
  • William Mudie;
  • Robert Mudie.

Francis Mudie was living 1st October 1642 when he is named in a sasine of that date, but he was dead before 5th (or 6th) April 1644, when his son and heir, James is designed as of "Melsetter".
