March 12, 1686, he married Sarah Whipple, at whose death, 16 March, 1709, he had three daughters living, his son John having died, 25 September, 1708, in his eighteenth year, a Senior in Harvard College. His estate was £1914. He bequeathed five pounds to the First Church for plate, and one hundred pounds to Mrs. Elizabeth Hirst, of Salem, to whom he was betrothed. He was taken sick at Ipswich, Sabbath day, July 29, 1711. 'His marriage having been put off to the 31st, he died the next Friday, 3 August. His intended wife was with him. Judge Sewall's Diary, which gives these facts, says, 'Most compleat and surprising disappointment that I have been acquainted with.' ' "[4]

  • John2 Whipple (John1, MatthewA) baptized 25 December 1625 in Bocking, Essex County, England; died 10 August 1683 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. He married (1) Martha Reyner about 1653 at Ipswich. She died 24 February 1679 in Ipswich (2) Mrs. Elizabeth (Cogswell) Paine 28 June 1680 at Ipswich. John emigrated to Massachusetts Bay colony in 1638 with his parents when he was almost 13 years old. He was an entrepreneur and started a number of business in Ipswich. He was an officer in King Philip's War, served as selectman, Essex county treasurer, and Ipswich's representative to the general court for four years between 1674-1683. He left an estate of £3,000. John and Elizabeth had no children.
