Francis William Reitz was appointed Usher of the Black Rod. His son, also Francis William Reitz (who had married Blanca Thesen of the shipping family), had lost the Beaufort West election by a few votes and accepted a repeated invitation from the Orange Free State to become its Chief Justice. He afterwards became its Presidents. One of his younger sisters married W P Schreiner, later PM of the Cape Colony and brother of Olive, a great friend of Mary Cloete's daugher Mary. Young
