About Frans Weissglas

Former chairman (Speaker) of the Dutch House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer)

Drs. Frans W. Weisglas has played a leading role in Dutch politics for many years. He was spokesman on foreign and European affairs for the liberal party, VVD, for twenty years. From May 2002 until December 2006, he was the first ever elected Speaker of the Dutch House of Representatives. He liked stylish debates and a correct use of the Dutch language. He was a neutral and humorous chairman, who always made sure all debaters got an equal opportunity to speak. As a conference chairman he cherishes the same values.

Frans Weisglas was a diplomat at the Department of Foreign Affairs from 1970 until 1982. He was a Dutch representative to the United Nations in Geneva and secretary of the Minister for Development Co-operation, Jan de Koning. In 1982, he became a member of the House of Representatives.
